RE: There isn't much for a man - Layre - 6/10/2026

Layre did not know why the land had been sick when he arrived. He did not ask. As a soldier often that was a forbidden question. And he had learned the lesson well.

He saw the elders the spikes. But chose an elderly doe. Still larger than most. But we'll past her prime. The spikes he hoped not all would die and keep the populace from ending

He turned his head and motioned towards the one he chose.

Would you prefer to deal its death or hold it tight?

The massive red hunter is inconceivably polite, first subduing his stride and now giving priority to the mongol.

Batu rustles his nape, either position would be better suited to a man of Layre’s size and skill, and he trods after in inquisitive awe.

“I will slow her while you deal the end,” horselord whispers, waiting for a signal before pushing out from the grass and beginning the hunt.

Layre did not know how else to be. He was a guest ina home he did not know. Among wolves that did not speak his language. That did not understand him or what he had suffered through. The saef option was the kind option and he chose to be kind.

Layre is quick to watch the beasts below them. Blue eyes assessing. Taking in the sides of the valley. The trees. What could harm and what could hurt.

Layre nodded. And began a wide berth around to get into position to strike after Batu dealt with the legs.

He flies into the valley, an arrow loosed from bowstring. To run, to pant, to breathe deep the flowing air, all these things are good for a hunter's body after standing as a lithos for so many hours outside the empress’ apartments.

Thoughts of disconcert cannot permeate while the wind bleats strongly through ears and tongue. Batu dives through the herd, working to divide the old cow from her kin, pushing her up against the rim of a valley butte before leaping for a latch on the ragged hind.

Layre watches the man go. And a feeling of nostalgia rises up as he thunders the other way. Too long it has been since he was working with another. Too long. And the feeling, ah it was indescribable. Muscles stretched and burned. Each thud of his large paws. The vibrations worked up. All the kinks and the bends slowly unknotted.

She was taken swiftly and pushed against the rib. Layre was swift to the side of his companion. Teeth snapping at the cow's face and throat. Finally latching tightly and he used both his momentum and his weight to carry her to the earth and crush the veins that carried her life blood. Precise.

Precise, experienced, the red hunter lays their quarry low with little sport and great compassion, and as the mongol adjusts his own grip, he wonders what god the man reveres to move in such a way.

Cow blood is pooling, slickening bites. She staggers and Batu shifts from forceful kick to control a hip, waiting out the fight as Layre drains her.
