eye of the universe - Yakone - 3/12/2026

“Old man?”

She had slept, and slept well, for the first time she could remember. Since before Khun had died. But looking at her companion, she couldn’t say the same for him.

“Still alive?”

She didn’t even know his name, which Yakone meant to rectify. Unless he’d died overnight.

“...alive?”

Hawthorn sniffed, waking with a start.

Unfortunately, he mumbled, wiping the grit from his eyes. Somehow the bags under them felt bigger. Wha’ time is it? he asked, his back cracking and popping as he sat up.

He squinted bleary-eyed past the girl to where orange light pooled at the den’s entrance, and nodded. Right, yeah, let’s get you something to eat.

Gods, he’s decrepit.

She’s thin, sure, but at least her bones aren’t snapping apart. Yakone prides herself that the makeup of her ancestral body is strong, the youthful muscles in her runner’s legs and down her spine still supple and warm even in this cruel winter. She moves briskly away, giving ample room for the old hunter to rise.

“You need a moment? Need to do a warm-up, or something?”

Might be for the best, Hawthorn replied, pulling himself into a deep stretch that was far louder than it was relieving. You sleep okay? He twisted into another stretch, joints crackling in protest, stubborn stiffness keeping him in place a moment longer than he liked.

Satisfied, he straightened as best he could in the small den and pulled himself to the entrance. Overnight, it seemed to have shrunk, a small drift of snow beginning to block the doorway. He pushed through the narrow opening and shook loose the clumps clinging to him as he stepped onto the bitterly cold mountainside.

What do you say we head into the valley? Anything still alive’ll be pooled up where it’s warmest—low ground, somewhere sheltered from the wind.

“Yeah, yeah. The valley.” Muradoii is already bursting into a youthful lope, the anticipation of a hunt arming her limbs to break heavier drifts. Fel winds scrape down the ridge, carrying crisp odors of slate and pine. Further below, the valley spreads like a pale chalice, mist hanging thick and low in its belly.

From a higher ledge she descends, landing heavily in the powdered sedge and shooting her glittery red challenge back at the old man.

“Just try not to break a hip coming down.”

Hawthorn rubbed the last of the sleep from his eyes and looked out across the valley; thinking just how much the wind-swept drifts resembled the whitecaps near his home. His hawkish eyes surveyed for any signs of movement, signs that anything might have survived the night besides himself and the girl.

A thump behind him made him jolt. The girl had plunged into the untouched snow, powder bursting around her in a soft cloud. She looked up at him then, a challenge gleaming in her eyes, and Hawthorn felt his lip twitch despite himself.

He crouched, squaring his haunches like a cat, then sprang after her, pushing past the last of the morning stiffness. His longer limbs gave him a slight advantage, carrying him just ahead of where the girl waited. He struck the snow hard, vanishing into an explosion of white, and lay there for half a breath, grateful for the cushioning.

By the time the snow had settled around him, he had already turned toward her with a smirk, humor dancing in his eyes.

What was it you were saying?

He’s good at being insufferable.

She is too. Yakone gives him nothing but a hyperbolic eye role before plunging off into the frosted thickets. The day is dim, but clear enough that she can now discern bush from bramble. Claws tear at the earth to release scents, muradoii spurning the scurry of ground squirrels and lesser rodents in favor of something large and more worthy of their hunt.

“Think there’s deer here?”

RE: eye of the universe - Hawthorn Mohrgast - 3/24/2026

The humor didn’t leave Hawthorn at her rebuff. It settled instead into a raised brow as she marked her claim on the land, the way brash youth were wont to do.

There won’t be if you keep talking, he said, glancing up as a lone bird startled and fled. Didn’t take a genius to see how she had ended up half-starved.

Game’s scarce. Deer if we’re lucky. Goats, more likely. That’s assuming there’s anything left breathing.

They’ll be out looking for food now, same as us. Not much to eat, so they’ll be travelin’ farther from the mountain.

He drew in a slow breath, tasting the air, and altered his path. Though I think we’re more likely to find more of what the cold’s already killed.
