You're looking for light only you can ignite - Wendigo - 5/6/2026 Leaving the Northfall stop vague and just assuming Grim Selkie are nearby since this is the only planned leg of the journey lol
Wendigo was pretty sure they had to go south for the howff, but, well... that wasn't really important. He, Selkie, and Grim had freedom for the first time in their lives, and until they mentioned wanting to go home, he was content to just wander. Let them lead. Go where his nose told him to. He hunted when they grew hungry, careful to pick things that were... herbivore in nature to bring back for his brothers. He wasn't picky, but some were. They slept when they were tired, and Wendi found some sort of shelter to tuck them in to rest. He kept watch faithfully; nothing and nobody would come near them without his permission while they were in his charge. Not without dangerous consequences. He didn't hover, but like Wisp, kept as close as they wished him to be, and no further than he could still respond in time to help them. He wouldn't be the suffocating big(?) brother that couldn't let them spread their wings, even if he knew what dangers lurked. He kept them together. He kept them healthy. He kept them safe. He... didn't know how to do much else. Sometimes, he just nodded at them to keep walking, and slipped off. Usually, he came back with prey. Tonight was no different; sent them along the shore and stepped away without warning or anymore reason than the hint of a scent on the breeze. But hey, the coyote that had been lurking? His brothers never even saw it. And Wendi didn't need to share the eider he'd snagged in a flurry of black and white feathers after he'd dealt with it. It was growing dark properly when he caught back up. They'd been traveling along the shore for days, enjoying the ocean and the ease of fishing (that, admittedly, Wendi did not have an easy time at), feeling the sun on their backs and letting the moon guide them at night. He didn't realize how much he'd missed seeing the sky, though he wished he recognized the stars here. They were different from those he'd memorized, leaving him one less way to navigate even if he knew which way to go. It was almost a good thing he wasn't in a rush. He couldn't have even if he wanted to. Night had fallen, but as Wendi kept an eye out for somewhere to rest, something else caught his eye. A glow. Deep, vibrant. Purple? He headed towards it, the bird dangling from his jaws. He whuffed around it for his brothers' attention and nodded towards the shine. Might not be a place to sleep, but it was interesting. RE: You're looking for light only you can ignite - Selkie. - 5/8/2026 Wendi led them further north, Selkie was very sure that home was actually south but he did not protest, and Grim did not seem to be interested in protesting either. They found all sorts of caves and tree overhangs to sleep in (though he still missed the inn a little) and Wendi brought them food. He was much better at hunting than Selkie was. Selkie was still only catching leaves and crunchy insects, which were not very filling. Or that was the case until they reached the seashore, and then it was very funny how he tried to keep away from the water! It did not register much. Selkie was absorbed. The sea was freezing but he walked with paws in the surf, leaping in and out of the water and shaking it off sunwarm fur. He had even collected plenty of trinkets. Although they were hard to carry, so he had to keep to only a few. A round, weathered pebble of seaglass. A little rock that glittered in the sun, strange spiral shapes imprinted within. A dry stick of wood (this was not a very exciting treasure, but was fun to throw into the water and chase). He remembered more vividly being sleeker, faster. Warmer. The water was cold and tossed him this way and that but some parts of his body were good at imitating his dreams, shadowy though they were. He had even caught a fish- one that had mostly washed up on shore, but a fish! Not even Wendi could do that. The days were long but never felt boring. Wendi- who liked to wander off sometimes, though Selkie knew he was always close by if they called- came back with a bird dangling from his jaws. This was the time of evening where they would look for a sleeping place, and Selkie searched for trees kicked up by the tide or crevasses hewn into glacial ice, until Wendi's low whuff pulled attention away. Selkie squinted after the purple glow in mirror imitation of brĂ¡thair, curious. Tail swaying at his back, he glanced between both siblings. Then broke into a run. Stubborn snow and misting saltwater kicked up into a fine dust under the fading sunlight as he sped along the shore, determined to reach it first! |
