There will come a soldier - Sparrow - 5/12/2026

Set on 4/17, a few days after the bwp ended

They've traveled through the tunnels before, but it never stops feeling weird.

After a quick hunt to feed Persimmon, they set off again, coming up to the borders they knew oh so well as the sun was beginning to sink towards Northfall's mountain.

But...there was a scent there, that Sparrow hasn't smelt in ages.

Fable.

Well what do you know The warden spoke, mostly to themself. You're about to meet a real nice lady Purse, now, you remember what you're supposed to do at someone's borders? May as well make this a lesson reminder, a quiz for the princeling. The borders didn't smell like Sparrow anymore, they've been gone since the ice age began to prevent their poor legs and nose falling off from frostbite.

Hell, Sparrow didn't even smell like Avon anymore, being gone for so long, babysitting Apple's kids and helping around the Dusks.

The warden of Avon looked at the pup expectantly, waiting for his answer.

Persimmon, if nothing else, was an obedient little boy still. When Sparrow said sit, he sat, and when she bid him to stay, he stayed. Waited. Wherever he was pointed to, he was happy to simply exist, observe. Everything was so new, and while tempting, he was contained enough to just watch the world around him.
For now.

The tunnel was dark, and weird, but if Persi noticed anything odd, he didn't show it.

If the rapidly-infecting wound hurt him any, he didn't show that either. His limp grew heavier, but when it was too bad, Sparrow picked him up. The whole thing was frustrating, but he didn't mind being carried, either. He found he was ridiculously tired lately, feet dragging, but hey -- he'd just helped free a guy and save the world! That was hard work!

They were carrying onwards when Sparrow slowed, but Persi didn't notice at once -- not till his escort spoke up, mentioning... a nice lady? Well, he liked nice people! He liked meeting others, in general. The Prince turned his head over his shoulder, sniffling a little at his red, puss-filled wound as it came into view. Looked icky, didn't it?

'now, you remember what you're supposed to do at someone's borders?' Persi nodded, grinning wide, and kept on walking as Sparrow stopped.

'course, he squeaked, crooked little tail wiggling, Gotta stop and say hi, ask 'afore you can go in! Does the nice lady live in another kingdom?

He looked around as if searching, and paused some steps over the border, frowning.

Where'sit at?

Sparrow watched the boy just...walk over the borders, the coywolf's shoulders deflating a little at the realization. Can't smell it huh? Right under your feet? Stepping forward now, tapping at the pathway that was being worn down by the wardens, mostly Fiadh and Fable . Well, since ya can't smell for shit, sometimes borders are marked by trails. Not all o' them, but older packs. Y'gotta be real polite an' careful if ya can't smell em, aight? Some packs are real mean if ya just walk right over, could get yerself killed that way

Now, with that warning out of the way.

This here, is the Kingdom of Avon, and from the smell of it it's Matriarch Fable is home at last She did have to wonder though how Fiadh and Dimitri were taking it, Fiadh had taken the leadership role and carried it with pride, would she have handed it over without a fuss? Maybe, if that aunt of hers hadn't crawled into her ear completely. It's the pack I came from before I went south, I told y'all about them, yea? Sparrow didn't actually remember if she had spoken of Avon or not, she's fairly sure she did, but she's also told these kids stories from her homeworld.

Anyway, howl an announcement with me, ready? Sparrow asked, tail wagging lightly as they waited a moment before howling out her wonky ass howl that sounded more coyote than she looked. Sparrow knows where to go though, so when they finished howling they began walking towards the center of the territory. S'my house too, so we don't have to wait to be let in the warden spoke after she winked, motioning on-wards. Fabs is a real nice lady, her kids are sweet too If they're also around. You'll make some friends here I think

Can't- what? Persi frowned, head tipping, and dropped his head. His nose twitched, but not to inhale; just poked about, looking for something... different. Something that marked the boundary he always heard so much about. After a moment, he just shook his head.

Sparrow pointed out an area, and with a note of triumph, he noted what she meant. The pads of many steps had worn through a sort of path, and this, he could make note of. What a small little thing to notice! And Sparrow said not everyone had it, and that he had to be really careful -- really polite.
He could lose his life, depending on the pack.
Persi nodded seriously, but frowned more deeply.

If theres no path, how'm I supposed t'know where to stop?

Sparrow said this was the kingdom of Avon, and their Matriarch, Fable, was home. Didn't sound like they'd expected as much, but that was a good thing! Persi's smile returned, and he dug into memory as his babysitter asked if they'd mentioned here before.

I think so, he chirped -- the name did sound familiar, and he knew his mentor lived somewhere else, too, but that was about all he could recall.

Howl?! He could do that! Bouncing in place, Persi tipped his head straight up to the sky and howled with all his squeaky might. But! Sparrow also said they didnt have to wait, because she lived here! Cool, he rumbled, bowing into a play-stance with a bit of a wobble before moving along to continue forward. This was the best adventure ever!! He wished his littermates were here, and Mutter, but Sparrow also mentioned that Miss Fable had kids of her own, and that he could make friends.

Round, owlish eyes peered up at Sparrow.

REALLY?!
