It was the strangest things, to see the clouds in such a way. Aningaat had never quite seen anything like it in all his life. His whole life of literally two moons, that is.
As the sky lit up with sunset, instead of puffy loose white, sleeves of little wisps or even dark clouds which covered much of the blue sky, these clouds were quite round and they looked so solid, like he could reach up and grab them if he had the height to do so.
Was this normal??

The south is strange, in its warmth and damp, many leagues from the things Tatsaaye' knows. Gone are familiar pine groves and the thunder of caribou-hooves; the soil is thick and wet and the leaves long and broad. There is a heaviness to an air she knew before to be brisk and swift and cool.
Tatsaaye' struggles through dense thickets and marshy earth, wishing for the sand-trails of elk forest, across low water tangled up in tree root. But there is beauty here too, and a fondness she has found for the fireflies that glitter like stars in the dark.
And the sky! Tatsaaye' knows of the sunset glow that paints it gold and purple, but she has never seen these clouds. A thing of the south, perhaps, or else another of Ice Raven's signs, like the pretty pink lakebirds.
Tatsaaye' tests the air with her tongue and nose. It is harder to taste a storm in this wet marshy air, but perhaps there is a freshness of approaching rain. She has been made damper by far here than she ever has in the north.
"Water makes them big," storm-girl says confidently, though she has never seen such shapes either. "Soon it will rain."
