The Volcanic Keys never slept.
Even before dawn, the jungle breathed. Cicadas sang from somewhere high in the canopy. Waves rolled against the black volcanic shore in slow, patient rhythms. Steam drifted lazily from cracks in the mountain where the earth exhaled, carrying the scent of salt and sulfur through the humid air.
To most wolves, it was noise.
To Anubis, it was conversation.
He wandered without urgency, weaving between tangled roots as though following directions only he could hear. His long legs carried him awkwardly over the uneven stone, every stride graceful only because he'd spent months learning how to inhabit a body that never quite felt like his own.
"Left."
The voice came from somewhere inside the cliff.
He obliged.
Another whisper laughed softly from the canopy overhead.
"You're learning."
"I've always been learning," Anubis answered, almost absentmindedly.
A pair of brightly colored birds erupted from a nearby tree. One circled overhead before disappearing beyond the volcano.
"Don't follow it."
He hadn't intended to.
The blessings rarely wasted words.
His mismatched eyes drifted toward the dormant volcano towering above the island. Heat shimmered around its dark slopes, making the stone ripple as though the mountain struggled to decide which shape it wished to wear. Faces surfaced briefly in the flowing distortion—not frightening ones, simply patient observers who watched him as he watched them.
He dipped his head politely.
One smiled before melting back into the rock.
The path beneath his paws suddenly felt...incorrect.
Not dangerous.
Just unreal.
As though someone had painted a trail across the island and invited him to walk on the artwork instead of the earth itself. He could hear the sand shift beneath his weight, yet the sensation arrived a heartbeat late, disconnected from the movement of his legs.
His paw touched the ground.
Then, a moment later...
Ah.
There it was.
He continued walking.
The delay no longer surprised him.
Perhaps this was simply what it felt like to exist between two layers of the world.
The jungle opened onto the shoreline where turquoise water lapped against dark stone. Sunlight glittered across the waves, each reflection flashing too brightly to look directly at.
"Don't stare."
I wasn't.
"You were thinking about it."
...Fair.
A faint smile tugged at one corner of his muzzle.
The voices appreciated honesty.
His wispy blue aura curled lazily around his shoulders before fading into the ocean breeze. It always appeared after meaningful conversations, though he wasn't certain whether it came from him or from whatever unseen force had chosen to let him listen.
Either explanation pleased him.
Most wolves walked through the Volcanic Keys hearing birds and insects.
Anubis walked through the same jungle hearing guidance tucked between every sound.
He considered himself fortunate.
Not everyone was blessed enough to hear the island answer back.
Anubis is schizophrenic, whilst he does not appear it, he does not understand it to be afraid of it. He cannot quite, process it or emotions enough to care either. He believes himself blessed by something otherworldly.
