you're born of a jackal - Lichen - 8/7/2026

They wandered outside of the Howff, bright eyes observing the quieter world beyond their home's doors. Lichen found, sometimes, that the indoors was busy — loud, overwhelming. There was too much going on, too much to focus on, and that left little left for them to understand. Chaos often brewed, loud and clinking sounds of raucous parties. There were travelers and guests, a sea of unfamiliar faces.

But out here was quiet.

In their jaw, they held a small piece of bedding ... a strange, wet mixture of hay and fur that they'd taken from the edge of their nesting bed. It held the familiar scents of her family — of Kobold and Will-o'-Wisp — and it brought them comfort in the strangeness of the world outdoors.

It smelled a little funny. But it was home.

The sun was bright overhead, intense and heavy. Instinct drove Lichen into the forested shade, their bright eyes gazing upward at the glowing canopy above. The birds would sing, quiet and polite. And from somewhere in the undergrowth, a rabbit stirred, rustling in the hedges. Lichen would blink, noting the brown cottontail and the way it stood, so clearly visible and yet, trying to be invisible.

Lichen would freeze, mirroring the posture and putting their ears straight up. Eyes wide.

And Lichen and the rabbit would stare at each other.

Like some strange game of Chicken.

RE: you're born of a jackal - Will-o'-Wisp - 9/7/2026

Will-o didn't know what else to be but steady. Wendi searched often for Honor, to bring her home as he had the others, but he never had any success. Nor did she, when she went out, or Sarge. Nobody seemed to have seen hide nor hair of their daughter, and the Wisp tried not to weep about it in the presence of others -- child or husband or crewmate alike. She had spent too long pitiful and had been gifted too many back to be able to truly complain. What would Queenie say if she begged for perfection?

She hadn't meant to follow Lichen at all, but it was the girls scent she came across. The little creature was lively in her own way, strange and passionate and silent all in one. Not the way her large, dark counterpart seemed to be, no, but in her own.

Wisp watched as the girl straightened, her ears pressing back for the split-second she imagined Lichen in danger... but they stayed like that. The grey little rat-woman slunk forward idly, quiet herself, doing her best not to startle... whatever was happening!

A rabbit, she thought with amusement. Lichen was staring, copying, a rabbit -- eyes wide, ears high, body frozen. Neither seemed to have notice her there, watching, so she didn't intrude. The child had something between her jaws already, and Will-o wondered if she'd already hunted. There was no scent of blood to the air, but that didn't mean it wasn't a clean kill.
It didn't mean Lichen wouldn't drop it to lunge for the rabbit.

Wisp waited, watched, to see if her daughter would use the skills she'd been taught or rely on something deeper.
