Was I wrong about the world - Cahir - 11/21/2024

Skill: 「 - 」
Thread Title: Shrek 3: 「 Losing Streak

It happened in an instant, and Cahir had no possible way of explaining what exactly transpired.

He was falling into water; Was it a lake? A river? The ocean? He had no way of knowing, especially with how quickly he was suddenly submerged. For a moment, it was a mixture of confusion and panic. It was not a dream, of this he was certain, the way his nose burned and lungs ached for air was too real. The current moved him back and forth before he was able to break the surface, a string of coughs choking out as water escaped his airway.

The man waded, his muzzle and ears dripping heavily as he glanced around the basin he was within. Wherever he was, it was barricaded with mountains. Cahir coughed again, then proceeded to swim to land. Deep bellied inhales were taken as he dragged his body along the rocky shore. It wasn’t a far swim, nor was it strenuous, but the adrenaline dump that was ebbing away left him feeling exhausted.

He would just lay there, for a bit. Yeah, that was a good idea.

Skill: Seer

Another day, another body in the lake.

Dimitri stares out at the figure, ears perking back slightly. Just lying there on the shore. He doesn't open his mouth, not for a bit, because he's busy with a ritual. Arrange the stones by the lake in such a way, and the dark will stay away. He doesn't think about why it works, just that it must. That's the only thing to keep the visions at bay.

With the rocks settled, he glances back at the stranger. The stranger that hasn't moved, but whose chest rises and falls. There should be fear there, because he was told that sometimes spirits from the otherworld are hostile, but he no longer feels any fear looking at others. He assumes they're going to hate him regardless, and he no longer needs their approval. Besides, a spirit can see through you. And this one is corporeal now, coming into form, but who knows how long his sight will last?

Dimitri clears his throat. "Do you intend on staying there all day?"

RE: Was I wrong about the world - Sable - 11/22/2024

Silent paws wandered with no real direction along the frosting earth. It was not yet winter, and while the sun still shone brightly along the edging horizon, it was the autumnal shift in the breeze that reminded her that winter was near. Crisp, the air blew between strands of darkened fur as she pressed forward, a gaze of hazel edging toward the incoming silhouettes that lingered on the lakefront.

Although a relatively long-term member of Elysium, Sable had found herself reluctant to speak with much of anyone. Rather, her time consisted of blending into the shadows of the evening and doing her own due diligence along Elysium’s borders. It was the least she could do, she surmised.

Still, she felt like a fish out of water, as though the wolves that lingered in this beautiful mountain were just not the wolves for her. An itching feeling often crept up her spine in the moments of her solitude, a voice that reminded her that they were too good for her company. Souls, as her tiny voice had told her, that Sable would ruin the longer she stayed.

And yet, still, she had not left.

As her paws finally cut the distance, facing a silver boy—lanky and scrawny and building some stone contraption— Sable flashed him a disinterested look. Someone was always doing something weird along this lake bed, and Sable had learned it was better not to ask.

However, the sight of another—large and built like a rock—caught most of her attention immediately. He did not smell of Elysium as many others did, and he appeared soaking wet. A brow rose in quiet suspicion, and a quiet, mysterious smile spread about her lips with ease. She twisted an ear toward the other’s words—no doubt just as curious about this stranger’s entrance as she—as her paws would move to prod the stranger at his side.

Hey, she hissed at him as her paws poked and prodded at his flank again. You alive?

With his eyes still closed, Cahir heard the approaching footfalls of a casually paced individual, shortly after, a stranger’s voice filled the empty space. The man’s ears flicked, though he made no attempt to get up quite yet. From another direction, an equally unhurried pace was coming closer. This one actually prodded him, causing his silver eyes to open, when doing so he was surprised by how heavy his lids felt. Was he that tired from the ordeal?

Cahir’s head lifted, casting a gaze upon a figure of silver and one of black and white. Not all day, he offered the boy with a small grin. Just a short rest after having to fight the unexpected water, still, he hadn’t a clue as to what actually happened. Turning his attention to the second, his head angled down, staring at the paw that was poking him like some sort of poorly performed corpse examination. For now. Unless you plan to change that? there was an edge of playfulness to the question, a single brow rising and his small grin remaining spread to his lips.

It was evident that the two were of the same group, their scent strong and telling him all he needed to know: this was their home, likely a central section of the territory, based on the way markings were so thick and fresh around him. How could he have possibly ended up in the middle of a pack’s territory? It wasn’t as if he could have just waltzed in.

Pulling himself to his feet, Cahir shook himself out, removing as much excess water as he could. Sorry for— the man looked over his shoulder, taking a quick glance at the lake before facing the duo once more, —escaping your lake? the influx implied it as an odd question, since it was an unusual, yet nearly comical, thing to happen. Why a lake? Why here? … Where was here?

Dimitri's behavior is cool, perhaps a bit detached, but not necessarily unfriendly. His glance is neutral, and the man's smile is returned with a small one. He's not going to run up, though. People come this way all the time. "The lake's a portal. We're used to it." Well, some people still hated it, but Dimitri's done worrying about it. Maybe something terrible will come through the lake one day, and he'll regret being so casual about it, but for now? He's quite fine to ignore it.

"So long as you cause no harm, you're welcome here. If you need to sit for a while, you're welcome to." He adjusts the next rock. "And don't plunge back out into the lake. As far as we know, no one gets back to where they came from through it." There has to be a way off the island, of course, but Dimitri's never found it. Nor does he really wish to. There's no saying what sort of world exists beyond Vivarium's waters.

A smirk pulled at the corners of her lips as she regarded the other, his words causing the faintest of chuckles to spill from her lips. Don’t tempt me with a good time, she murmured to the stranger.

Although when he rose, Sable was quick to rear backward, her steps dancing atop the snow as her head would duck and her ears would lower. Though quick, she had not been fast enough to avoid all the water that seeped from his coat. Droplets remained sprinkled across her features, dotting her muzzle, ears, and cheek as she flashed him a curious glint—tentatively holding back any other emotions that wished to leak out.

Though her lips parted to speak, Dimitri’s voice registered first—stealing her words and explanations that she held for the stranger.

With an inaudible sigh, Sable dipped her chin toward a nod, A portal, she said half-amusingly, reluctantly agreeing with the other with a flick of her tail. That’s what they believed, at least. Although, Sable wasn’t so sure.

As he said, it happens. A dismissive twitch of an ear followed her attention toward the water-logged wolf, You must be confused, she started, Care to walk with me? I’ll give you a tour.
