Northfall King's Tourney: Aurelia x Shiloh - narrator - 2/25/2025

THE KING'S TOURNEY

One by one, combatants fell - or relented - to their opponents. The day deepened and winter's chill threatened to return when the imminent cape of night descended upon the mountain. For now, daylight held strong for the near-last warriors to return to the ring.

Hours had droned by since the battles first began, yet the fervor of the crowd seemed only to grow with each passing moment. Valhalla itself held its breath for the next strike. Clouds had gathered in gradually in the once-clear sky but, at last, a shaft of sunlight would break through, pooling down upon the congregated bodies and the two silhouettes within the ring. If that wasn't a call to arms from the heavens themselves, then one never could have existed.

AURELIA X SHILOH

AURELIA is attacking first.

This was an unfortunate turn of events.

All that hard work, and now she had to face her sister's... boyfriend.

I don't want to be here either, she said flatly, quick to be the first to express distaste for the match. Still, rules were rules, and he had climbed his way up through the tournament just as fairly as she had - even if the pair regarded each other with thinly-veiled unease.

Let's get it over with.

Part of her wondered how Tiberii might react depending on the results of this charade. If she won, would Tiberii be angry that she shamed her - boyfriend - thing - in front of the crowd, or would she instead cheer for her sibling's victory and the insurmountable force of the Shakti-Vaes clan?

If Shiloh beat Aurelia fair and square, thoroughly throttling her in the ring...

... Would Tiberii kill him in front of Northfall, or more privately at home?

Sinking into a resigned crouch, Aurelia took initiative and began by sprinting in a jagged pattern of zig-zags on her way toward him, hoping to disrupt his tracking - and then leapt for his left hind limb, jaws open and ready to use what weight she had to pull him off-balance.

With two wins under his belt, Shiloh was quite chuffed. The sense of pride he often tried (emphasis on tried) to keep at bay about his abilities worked its way into his stride as he entered the ring. He hadn't caught the name of his combatant as he strutted forth, his chin tipped upward in a show of confidence.

It wasn't until he caught the monochrome form of Aurelia settled opposite of him that his showboating ceased.

He blanched beneath his fur as he stared at the smaller Shakti-Vaes woman, some of the light leaving his eyes as he tried to process what was happening. His expression slipped, giving way to something closer to the pale reflection of mortal fear.

Was she... his opponent?

Grey-blue eyes swept left then right, beseeching the frozen mountain for his actual opponent, but there was only her. His gaze settled upon the form of Tiberii in the crowd and his previous desire to show off for her quickly died in the face of who his opponent was.

Fuck.

This wasn't good... at all.

He felt quite certain the bull would trample him into the very earth if a single hair on Aurelia's head was out of place, but it appeared the smaller wolf had no intentions of making matters easy for him.

Her voice pulled his attention back to her and she, at least, shared his distaste for this unfortunate turn of events. It was vaguely comforting to know she did not relish their match-up, but he was instilled with dread as she set into motion.

Quickly, he tried to formulate a plan that would see the least amount of harm done to Aurelia and all he could scrape together was to play the game of avoidance: He would do his best to evade her maneuvers in the hopes she would run out of steam and concede.

It probably wasn't going to work - but the alternatives weren't great as they all resulted in his red hide being made into a new rug for the Shakti-Vaes clan.

Nothing was going to plan, least of all when he snapped back into the moment and realized she was nearly upon him. In a knee-jerk reaction, he darted to the right to avoid her, but instead opened himself up to her offensive and her strike landed on his left hind leg.

He felt the limb be pulled backwards, disrupting his movements and nearly sending him face-first into the slush of ice, dirt, and blood they "brawled" upon. Shiloh managed to save his pretty face from insult at the last possible moment and he shifted his weight to the other three legs in an effort to stabilize himself.

In an attempt to regain the use of his besieged limb, he tried to kick his leg to shake her loose and afford him some space.

Three very important ideas had been instilled within Aurelia from a young age:

1) Never tell a lie. It is a waste of time, and you're not very good at it (really, she wasn't).

2) If you are going to do a job, do it properly.

and

3) In all things, exude dignity and honor.

Shiloh was actively violating two of the three codes of conduct in which she had been raised, and right now, her perception of him was that of an avoidant coward. Surely he wasn't afraid of her - his lauded history as a fighter was no secret to the Shakti-Vaes women, so why, then, was he so determined to flee? Aurelia frowned.

Tiberii's dark shadow loomed in the distance as two golden eyes full of sharp intent pierced through the ring.

Aw, hells.

A sinking feeling churned in her gut as she made contact with Shiloh's hind limb, and he gave a halfhearted kick in an attempt to dislodge her grip. She remained firm in her task, glaring up at him with a baleful gaze as she jerked his leg back and shook it pointedly. He had to see this through - if he threw the match intentionally, she would never forgive him. Tiberii's wrath be damned; Aurelia could explain the necessity of their violence later if she even needed to at all, but this was important both for Northfall and for her.

This was a test of her skills; of all that she had learned from Genghis.

She spat out his leg in disgust.

Do not take this from me, she said frostily, sidestepping quickly, And do not take this from my deceased mentor.

Aurelia squared her shoulders.

I demand you either fight, or walk away from me right now.

Something stung at the corners of her eyes.

I mean it. You dishonor me.

His leg was released with far less effort than he expected. He had been careful not to kick so hard as to potentially vault her into the distant horizon if he struck her full force, but there was no relief to be found in Aurelia's willing relinquishment of his leg.

Shiloh shifted so he could face the Pillar as she spoke, his brows furrowed. Typically, she lacked the emotional intensity he was accustomed to from her black-pelted sister, but the grief of Genghis' passing was still fresh and she evoked his name. This was more than a silly spar to her, this was a proving ground for her - perhaps even for Dawnbreak, who she was the sole representative of this far into the tournament, discluding himself.

This clearly meant a lot to her, and he was foolishly making a mockery of it because he was trying to appease both sides - but that sometimes was not possible. Right now, he owed it to Aurelia not to disrespect the effort she had put into reaching this point; if any of his knights had done as he was doing, he'd have been disappointed in their lack of integrity. It hadn't been his intention, but that scarcely mattered.

He pressed a breath through his nostrils, a stream of vapor rising from his muzzle.

You're right, he told her, his posture already settling into a more battle-ready form.

His back was to Tiberii, so he could not discern what was crossing her expression, and perhaps it was better that way. A hitched smile, though dimmed, spread across his lips and an edge of challenge rose within his eyes.

Ye better be quick on your feet, lass, Shiloh offered as the only warning as he barreled toward her, kicking off with his corded hind legs and aiming to tackle her with the side of his body.

Tiberii was going to kill him.

Should the red wolf prevail and blood be spilled in the effort of a fair victory, she would put in a good word for him to her sister - it might save his life.

Nevertheless, this was better. She despised the necessary display of emotion it took to spur him into action, but she would rather publicly expose herself for a fraction of a second than suffer the shame of a match thrown in her favor. Shiloh would have been damned forever in her mind; a dishonorable coward, a man easily swayed by - what? Did he truly fear Tiberii's wrath so much that he would rather humiliate Aurelia than suffer the girl a few temporary wounds?

Good.

Scarcely had the word left her lips than the red warrior charged forward with renewed vengeance, and Aurelia felt gratified that he rose to the challenge. She felt a little less gratified that she was about to be made into a fine grey paste, but maybe they could put her corpse in the lake with Genghis and she could float into the dark water's embrace alongside him.

Shiloh met his mark and the Shakti-Vaes was sent tumbling across the arena, all the air rushing from her lungs in a sudden woof as she gradually slid to a halt. Stupid! Why hadn't she stayed moving? Genghis had told her so many times that her speed was her weapon, and she'd just stood there like a self-satisfied idiot -

Aurelia grunted and quickly pushed herself back up to her paws.

Taking a deep, painful breath - she dashed forward and nipped at his limbs, then quickly leapt away - ouch - she hadn't taken a hit like that from Alduin when she employed this tactic before - and began to circle him like a darting sparrow, hoping to wear him down, and all the while her sides ached.

If he had suspected he would be facing Tiberii's sister in the tournament, there was a good chance Shiloh would have sat this venture out. But, his arrogance had led him here and now he was paying the price. It wasn't because he was afraid of fighting women - there had been plenty of lady knights in his guard and they had been just as capable as himself - but the Shakti-Vaes family had endured so much strife and he didn't want to contribute to it... or draw Tiberii's ire if he accidentally harmed her sister.

Shiloh knew his impact had the chance to sunder her, but he still felt a stir of guilt when she nearly buckled. Their size difference didn't help matters, but he stuck a pin in the reminder to apologize later... if there was anything left of the Shakti-Vaes at the end of it all to apologize to.

Maybe it would earn him a nice eulogy during his imminent funeral.

Shiloh moved slower than the silver slip of a woman and she was granted enough time to regroup by the time he reached her range. She was quick to capitalize on his slower-moving form, defying his bulk with sniping shots intended to befuddle him if he were green enough to chase her at every nip. He knew he'd wear himself out and weaken his foothold to keep over-extending to try and snap at her each time.

Instead, he held his place and waited for her to inch just a hair too close, all the while weathering the harrying. When he thought the moment was right, he took a side-step toward her and sought to shoulder check the smaller wolf as she dove in.

A nip too close, she stumbled for a fraction of a second as fresh pain blossomed from her side, and Shiloh took his chance.

His muscular shoulder made immediate and painful contact with her ribs as she staggered back, catching herself lest she be sent tumbling a second time. Once was enough; if she hit the ground again, she'd likely be down for the count. No - she had to make one last effort. Even if she lost now, she hoped Genghis could - see her - or even feel her progress - whatever it was a spirit could do when it had passed on, it was her singular greatest desire that he could witness the fruits of his labor.

She had made a mistake, and it likely cost her the fight.

It was a mistake she would learn from and never make again. Failure was not an option anymore, wallowing a thing of the past; she had to keep looking ahead to the future, to the best version of herself, and that Aurelia would have a beating heart of blood and steel and all the strength she would ever need to push past her grief.

Her sides throbbed in fresh agony, but she smiled back at Shiloh - and for perhaps the second time of her life, she succeeded.

A real smile.

Genghis would have been proud indeed.

As her final effort, she mustered up what energy she had left and launched herself toward the nape of his neck; she wanted to lock in with her jaws and use momentum to try and carry him down with her.

She had moxie, Shiloh would give her that. Aurelia looked whisper thin, but she was wiry and nimble, and that could make all the difference in the tide of a fight. Capitalizing on one's strengths was more important than brute force - Tiberii charged in like a battering ram, but Aurelia used a little more finesse and calculation with how she mounted her attacks and counterattacks.

It was two entirely different types of fighting, and both had their place - he couldn't imagine trying to contend with them at the same time and it was fitting that the sisters were two halves of a whole and complemented the other's weaknesses.

As she reeled from his check, Aurelia flashed a smile - it seemed almost out of place on her stoic face, but the knight thought he understood. She was giving this spar her all, and he suddenly felt (slightly) less guilty about not throwing the fight.

He returned her smile with a grin, but he steeled himself for her reprisal to his attack. She would not go down easy, even as the odds were stacked against her.

It instilled him with a newfound respect for the Shakti-Vaes woman. She had clearly earned her placement thus far in this tournament and even her position as the Pillar of Knowledge - had she been one of the pages in the guard, he would have kept his eye on her for her potential as she marched up the ranks.

She launched for his nape and Shiloh was too slow to dodge entirely. Her jaws found purchase and he huffed against the pressure and added weight as she hung like a monochrome albatross, attempting to pull him down to the ground. His ruff, which had already been sheared earlier in the spar with the weird teenager, stung beneath her bite.

His shoulder ached from the impact and his side would definitely bear a bruise for his earlier shove, but he still had fuel in the tank to fend off her final gambit. He couldn't waste time taking inventory of his various aches and pains - he pressed into action, moving toward her as he tried to weaken her bite before attempting to shove her away with his upper body.
