Lonely Little Flower - Dandelion - 3/13/2025

It was a hard life walking alone. With the vanishing of the pretty white coyote, Dandelion was now finding himself wondering if he would ever find company again. Would they even stay this time around? It was hard enough already being away from his family.

Even now, he could remember the warm and happy faces of his parents. Eska and Yarrow had always been a good mother and father. Even with all of his siblings trying to get their attention, they always made room and time for their soft hearted boy.

Being up in the cold reminded him of them. A heat rose in his chest as the happy memories flooded his heart and mind. But the darkness of loneliness threated to take over it. Shrouding it like a toxic fume of dark clouds. Dandy continued through the borders that separated the northern and southern lands, each step revealing a more cautious wolf.

The morning sun baked lightly on to his pelt, relieving him of some of the cold that was trying hard to settle into his bones. With a shake of his fur to rid himself of the stiffness the cold was on setting, he continued his exploring without further fuss.

As the seasons slowly changed, so, too did Aisling's cast of familiar faces and her perception of the world.

The winter had made for a time of rifts. Like the disappearing snow banks, everything she had accepted as common and expected changed. Even before Gamma had come to see them, she had known the name yet not her face. Then, for just the briefest of moments, her family expanded, only to contract again when her older "sister" had died - which, according to her mathair, took her to a place they should not wish to follow her to. While her body rested within the earth, what figments had made her who she was were elsewhere.

It meant she wouldn't be around to get to know herself or her sisters, nor would she get to play - at least not with them. Aisling was still wrapping her head around the binary states of life and death, her tongue frozen even as her mind often ticked away with trying to understand what it meant to be somewhere that was not here.

Did the prey they ate go "there", too? Or only those who looked like them - all claws, shaggy fur, and rows of razor teeth?

Not unlike her mother, whose blush-furred form was several yards ahead of her, Aisling tended to get lost in the machinations of her own mind, where she spun starlit ideas of the world around her. She had joined Fable under the guise of following her on her morning patrol of the borders, but in actuality, she was more interested in seeking out the tiny pinpoints of spring that were making themselves known with greater emphasis in recent days.

It was bizarre but thrilling to find sprigs of green amid the sea of pink grasses, especially when she discovered dainty yellow blooms that dished their cheerful and bell-shaped faces to the sun high above. They were a delight and Aisling snooped through the grass in search of them, collecting the stems gently between her teeth as the span between herself and her mother grew ever-wider. Aisling suspected, if she behaved and sat still, she might be able to convince her mathair to help her put them in her fur.

She could catch up to her, Aisling was certain, so she did not fret when Fable's form dipped out of view. When her ears picked up the sound of grass beneath paws, however, she grew still and searched for the source. The tenderheart suspected it was her athair, but it was not a body of black and browns that crossed into her vision - it was instead a pale fellow with hints of earthen tones cast about his frame.

Her ears pressed forward, curious. His was not a face she knew - not at all. She had little concept of stranger danger, the young girl had always felt safe within her family's lands and her mother was ever so close. Silver-lilac eyes flicked in the direction Fable had gone before fastening on the newcomer once more, her paws moving toward him without further thought.

Are ye lookin' for flowers, too? she asked through her hold on the flower stems as she bounded toward the loner, tail waving amicably behind her haunches. I can share. She did, after all, have plenty.

Dandy did his best to feel a little more at ease, He walked through the blushing red fields with a softness akin to a little bunny, the aura around him most likely filled to the brim with soft and warm colors. With mixed matched eyes, he surveyed the area with childlike wonder. Even with the blanket of snow, it was possible to see the faint hints of green and red showing. A clear indication that spring was trying hard to make its debut. He would have taken in more of the herbal scents, if it wasn't for something else getting his attention.

The strong hints of honey and vanilla hit his nose like a slap to the face, although much nicer. Who brought the smell was even pleasant to look at, but not in the way most men thought of course. He was too innocent for that. A child of a rose tinted pelt came calmly walking over to him, her eyes of silvery lilac filled with a cute curiosity. Her voice was like that of a pretty bell. Oh, hello there. Where did you come from? Flowers? Oh I might be. Dandelion was startled and cautious at first. He wondered where the puppy's parents were and looked around for a moment before meeting the girl's gaze again. I'm Dandelion. What's your name, sweet one?

It only seemed right that anyone who was out at this moment was clearly in search of flowers. It's what she was doing, so it made perfect sense. Her thoughts were reinforced when the newcomer agreed with her sentiment, that he might be looking for flowers.

Of course he was - he didn't have to be shy!

She hopped forward a few more steps to deposit one of the brightly colored blooms into what she could reach of his mane, then danced back to observe her handy work. Thus far, she'd been regularly testing her flower arranging abilities on Fable, Foxglove and Epona - it was a welcome change to have a new canvas to work with. The youth beamed at the bright yellow petals next to his soft-colored fur.

It was perfect!

Her ears twitched as he continued to speak and she was surprised to learn his name was a flower. You're named after th' flower? she asked, eyes round with wonder. She remembered, almost a beat too late, that she hadn't introduced herself. M'name is Aisling!

She had been working on not stumbling over her name so much. At one time, she'd introduced herself as "Asslin" to Isaiah, but no more! Her speech became more proficient with every passing day.

M'family lives here in th' Kingdom o' Avon, Aisling explained, her tail swaying contentedly at her heels.

The young child was beaming with bright and happy energy. She came right up to him, fascinated by his name. Yes young one. I am named after the flower. My siblings are named after other plants too. Dandy smiled at her softly, happy that she seemed to be okay with him around. A gesture of friendship came in the form of a brightly colored flower, sticking right into his mane ever so gently. Thank you, my dear. That is very pretty. Aisling is a pretty name too!

He accepted the flower with great enthusiasm, wagging his tail softly back and forth. Aisling continued to be fascinated in him, keeping to her cheerful demeanor the whole time. The young male remembered when he was like that, so young and carefree. Ah to be a puppy again. Aisling then spoke of her pack and her family. It was a slightly different name, but the word Avon caught his attention. Where are your parents? What are their names? Maybe it was just coincidence, but he was hoping it was the same pack that he was told about before, by another male of their pack. Was he still here?
