snowblind - Bailu - 10/28/2025 Her first sensation was pain. A throbbing head that meant a day of rest, should she be able to take it. She reached for her bedside, ready to send for one of her servants, but the only thing she found at the other end was stone. Her toes skimmed the unfamiliar material, and her forehead wrinkled without once opening her eyes. When she inhaled, it was not to find the incense she’d lit the night before, but damp and must. Mildew tickled her nostrils, and a mighty sneeze rocked her from her curled position up onto her stomach. A leg came to cradle the crown of her head, and Bailu opened one eye to regard her surroundings. This was not where she had gone to sleep, in her bedroom overlooking the courtyard. Her resplendent silks were gone, the fluttering banners swept from her sight. She inhaled past the fluttering fur at the edges of her limbs, tasting the dampness in the air, the oncoming rain. Her limbs tucked beneath, and she pressed up onto her haunches, still holding her head with one leg. 這是什麼?Her voice sounded raspy, sounded old, and she raised her head and let her leg drop to join its twin. Every inhale spiked pain through her head, but it was abating the more she sat still. Thankfully, when she next opened her eyes, it was just a faint pain easily ignored. And it allowed her a glimpse of her surroundings. Bailu's nose wrinkled, reaching out to overturn an old stone. The stonework around her was old, weathered by the lapping water down a crumbling set of stairs. It turned her surroundings humid, a biting edge that had her pulling her limbs close and tucking her tail against a hip. Disgust rattled down her spine. 這太可怕了。The stonework had lost much of its detail to time, but she had little hope for its pre-destruction appearance. Especially if it wore away to this. She could not stay here, wherever here was. Wobbling limbs attempted to raise her from the stone, but vertigo very nearly brought her back. So she simply sat for a moment, breathing through the odd dizziness. RE: snowblind - Shēnléi - 10/30/2025 SKILL: ORATOR (1/5)
The sound of her sneeze cracked through the stillness—sharp, unceremonious, and completely graceless. From the shadows where the broken walls leaned beneath the weight of years, he laughed. It wasn’t often he saw his mother in such disarray, and for a fleeting moment, joy swelled in his chest at the sight of her familiar form. In this godforsaken place, it felt like a small mercy—a blessing only the Celestial Dragon could grant him. 天龍一定聽到了我的祈禱。 . His voice slipped through the ruin like sunlight through mist, low, familiar, threaded with humor that only barely hid his concern. He stood a short distance away, framed by what used to be an archway, fur gilded in the fractured light filtering through the cracks. Even in the gloom, Shēnléi had a way of commanding the room simply by being in it. He didn’t rush to her side, for he never did. Instead, he approached with the unhurried poise of a man who believed time itself bent around him. 如果你在這裡 ,he mused aloud, 也許梅或我的女兒們會跟隨。甚至可能連叔叔也會。He paused, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. 天啊,別讓我妻子出現——你可不會放過我。 His tone softened as he came closer, the teasing fading just enough to let the warmth bleed through. 也許天龍希望我殖民這片悲慘的土地 ,he said wryly, before the humor dimmed. 哦,媽媽……你怎麼來到這裡?發生了什麼事? When he finally reached her side, the playfulness ebbed into something gentler. His gaze softened — not with pity, but with the quiet warmth reserved only for the woman who had raised him. 這個地方真糟糕。 ,he murmured lightly, the corner of his mouth twitching upward. RE: snowblind - Bailu - 11/1/2025 His laugh reached her first, cutting through the haze of her headache. It was a commanding sound, one that would forever have her head turning to meet it. Bailu assembled herself with as much dignity as she could, raising her head tall and her limbs straight. It was a posture she held every day she had been under the eyes of more than her mother. The dignified regality that had her son’s father marrying her had never quite left her after he had been gone. She carried herself like the Empress she had never quite gotten to be. He was imperious in the light, his flurry of words falling on delighted ears. The corners of her eyes softened, and she finally moved to stand when he was standing beside her, and she raised a paw to gently press to his cheek. Her words were soft when she deigned to speak them, after looking over Shēnléi‘s face for any signs of pain, then over his shoulder to check for ruffled fur. Her eyes fell back to his, quietly demanding in a way only she could be with the Emperor. 有一天,你應該有孩子來尊貴你的妻子,但現在我只高興看到你活著。She let her paw drop beside its twin, moving in a slow circle around her son before she stopped in front of him one more time. 你還好嗎? 沒有人傷害你嗎? 你吃過了嗎?The line of questioning was soft, but sharp, as Bailu looked her son in his eyes for a moment before she was looking at their surroundings. 昨天很正常。 我沒有做過任何我以前沒做過的事情。 我查看了你的預約,和你叔叔談過,安排了會議,晚上我送了藥。 我的兒子,這些天我的關節對我不好。 然後我點了香,然後去睡覺了Her eyes fell caught on more stone, peeking out of the murk across distant puddles, and her nose wrinkled up to her eyes. 這太可怕了。 看看它是如何毀掉的。 天龍不會讓你和我處於這樣的混混。She slipped close, using a paw to skim the water’s surface. It was tepid, somewhere between lukewarm and cold. Bailu flicked water droplets from her paws, then looked over her shoulder at her son. 只有我一個人嗎?We’re they truly alone here? Or had others slipped through to this strange place. Part of her wished to ask the Dragon what this was supposed to be, but she kept her mouth shut. For now, at least. Even here, surrounded by ruin, she still looked the part of something regal and enduring—a relic of the empire’s grace that refused to bow to time. For a moment, the sight of her steadied him. Then she spoke, her voice soft but laced with that particular edge of command only she could manage with him. Her paw brushed his cheek, and he allowed it, even leaned slightly into the touch—a rare gesture from him and a quiet surrender to her affection. His eyes, pale and reflective as polished bronze, searched hers as she circled him. 我沒事,母親。His tone was even like the low cadence of a temple bell in the mist high up in the mountains. 這副身軀還沒學會如何屈服。 (I’m fine, Mother. This body hasn’t yet learned how to yield.) A faint smirk followed, the kind that pulled only one corner of his mouth upwards—a flash of the arrogance he was known for slipping through the mask of serenity he tended to maintain as Emperor. You worry too much,he murmured, switching back to the common tongue with that deliberate, slightly accented smoothness. If I had a scratch on me, I think you’d be the first to hear about it—loudly. He let the humor linger for only a moment before his expression softened again, gaze flicking over her, checking the faint tremor in her joints, the stiffness in her posture. You shouldn’t be walking through water like this. If it chills you, I’ll have to endure a week of you pretending it doesn’t. Shēnléi stepped closer so the distance between them fell away like a formality neither of them cared to keep. His voice dropped with uncertainty, though he tried to hide it. This place is not Heaven’s doing,he said at last, gaze lifting to the broken sky. No omen I’ve seen speaks of it. Whatever brought us here… it is outside the Dragon’s breath. So we tread carefully, until I understand its design. He looked back down at her, eyes glinting faintly in the dim light. But no,he said more quietly, answering her final question. You’re not alone, Mother. You’ll never be. RE: snowblind - Bailu - 11/2/2025 A delicate sniff left her as her son’s words, one eye rolling to look up at him, before she looked out across the water again. I am not that old, Shēnléi, nor am I so delicate. The water is not so chilled as to bring me pain. And even if it did, she would ensure he never guessed. She eyed the muck floating on the water’s surface, squinting at dark shapes to see if she could spy the shine of fish scales. But the water was dark and dreary, and she huffed out her breath. And I always worry for you.It was an easy admission, a vulnerability only her son could know of. To every other in the empire, Bailu was as solid as stone, a stern serenity that cast her in grace. No one could cross her and leave unscathed. But here, alone with Shēnléi, she leaned her shoulder to his for a modicum of comfort. Whatever could take us from the Dragon? It must be a great spirit to do so, to take even you.A queasy feeling swelled in her stomach, and a chill brought the fur of her back to stand. It made no sense, but she had never been of the priesthood. No. I suppose I am not.She leaned against him for a moment longer, before she stood straight again, tucking her vulnerability beneath her skin neatly. Have you found a place to stay? Or have you been sleeping in this mire?He didn’t smell it, but her senses were overwhelmed by the rest of the murk around them, so she stared at his coat in open suspicion. RE: snowblind - Shēnléi - 11/2/2025 SKILL: ORATOR (3/5)
He gave a soft, amused hum at her retort, one ear flicking as though to acknowledge it. Of course not,he said, a corner of his mouth lifting. Heaven itself would break before you would. His gaze followed hers out across the dark water, watching the ripples chase each other toward the far shore. His expression was calm and thoughtful, the way it always was when his mind drifted between logic and superstition. The spirit that could move us from the Dragon’s reach,he murmured, would not be one of mercy. If such a thing exists, I’d prefer it stay sleeping. His voice softened at the end, but I fear it’s awake. He shuffled his paws, a rare show of anxiety that he only allowed his mother, the woman who raised him as her own, though neither shared a shred of blood. I heard something worrisome from a local who’s now with me,He nodded his head behind himself, gesturing deeper into the ruins. There is something in this land, something terrible if he is to be believed. The frown pulled deeply at Shenlei’s lips and furrowed his brow in obvious concern. It made him run for days, mother to the point that he was half starved and had two paws in the ground when I found him. Whatever it is, it’s no benevolent spirit or the celestial dragon. He settled, bronze eyes turning to meet his own mother’s pale ones. When she leaned into him, he didn’t move away. For a brief moment, his shoulder pressed back against hers, a subtle, grounding touch that spoke louder than any words he might have offered. Then, as she straightened, so did he, his eyes catching the faint glint of accusation when she turned them on him. Mother,he said slowly, tone dipping into that deliberate, teasing drawl he only ever used with her. You wound me. Do you truly think I’d choose to sleep in this—he flicked a paw at the murky water, —masterpiece of filth? A faint chuckle left him, low and quiet but undeniably there. No. There’s a clearing just beyond those stones. Higher ground, dry soil. It will do until I find something better. He paused, looking her over with the same half-serious authority that had cowed generals. You’ll rest there tonight with the others. I’ll keep watch. There was an island west of here that he spotted and thought looked like a suitable place to re-establish the dynasty, but first, he wanted to see who else showed up, and he’s glad he did, for had he not waited, he would have missed his mother. Perhaps, next, his wives, daughters, or the rest of his family would show up. He truly hoped they did. There was no room for argument in his tone, though his eyes betrayed the faintest trace of humor, that glimmer of fond defiance he inherited from no one but himself. After a heartbeat of silence, he added under his breath, almost wryly, Besides, if I let the Empress-that-never-was ruin her fur in a swamp, the ancestors would start haunting me by dawn. RE: snowblind - Bailu - 11/9/2025 The poor creature..So ridden down by the spirit that had brought him here to be mostly dead by the time he was found. Bailu made a mental note to pray for him later, before the thought arrived that perhaps there was no gods to pray to anyway. The Dragon may not even hear her pleas. Her mouth screwed into a sharp line, but she was unrepentant. She didn’t let her fears slip into her eyes, or even to twitch her mouth beyond its frown. She stared out over the bog instead, watching the waves ripple at the edges of the stonework with a furrow in her brow. Well, I cannot say for certain. The gardeners had such stories when you were young. She arched a teasing brow her son’s way, only to halt at his words. Perhaps a younger Bailu would have been more offended at the proclamation of the epithet, but she only allowed herself an eye roll. She had never taken the time to ask if she had truly loved Shen’s father, and it was far too late now. She was well past her marrying age, she noted to herself as she sauntered past her boy, flicking his nose with her tail in a measured thwap. My dear boy, it would not be the ancestors who would haunt you. It would be me, and I have many more teeth. She picked her way towards the stones he had indicated, raising her head to look over her shoulder at him. Are you coming? You must introduce me.It wouldn’t do to not know everyone her son had acquainted in their brief time apart. RE: snowblind - Shēnléi - 11/10/2025 SKILL: ORATOR (4/5)
Shēnléi huffed, half a laugh, half a sigh. You still have that bite,he said, his tone dry but warm. Guess time didn’t dull your teeth after all. He watched her move through the muck with that same effortless grace, tail flicking his nose on her way past. Mother,he muttered, smirking, you haunt me just fine while alive. Can’t imagine the afterlife being much quieter. When she called, he followed, stepping beside her with his usual lazy ease. Introduce you?he said, brow lifting. You make it sound like they’ll survive long enough for that. Then, with that familiar glint of mischief, he flicked his tail against her flank. Now try not to scare them off, yeah? They still think I’m respectable. RE: snowblind - Bailu - 11/12/2025 Time would only dull my teeth if they fell from my gums. She replied in a haughty snip, striding beside her son step for step. Her tail bobbed faintly over her haunches, as cool eyes swept their surroundings. At the very least, Shen had found them somewhere without the muck of the swamp behind them, and for that she could be somewhat grateful. She tipped her head to the side to look at her son’s jawline, before she strode a few steps ahead, forever a bulwark against the world. Are you going to tell me who all is here? Or am I going to have to guess? You told me of the boy spat out by death, but have any other faces found you?Call it nosiness, or a mother’s inherent desire to know everything about her son. But Bailu knew she would have to cobble together her spy rings all over again, and that brought an itch right up her spine. She had worked so hard on it, stole it right out from under the previous spymaster’s nose, and now she would have to rebuild it all. Do not worry. I won’t scare them.Much. RE: snowblind - Shēnléi - 11/13/2025 SKILL: SKILL NAME (1/5)
Shēnléi let out a quiet tsk, the corner of his mouth tugging upward in something far too amused for a son who’d just been threatened with toothless wrath. Spirits forbid the day your teeth dull, Mother,he drawled, voice smooth as river glass. The continent would lose its greatest natural predator. He fell into step beside her, matching her pace with that effortless, almost arrogant grace of his—shoulders loose, head held high, every movement deliberate in the way of a man who’d spent his whole life being watched. Her tail bobbed, his ear twitched, and the faintest smile ghosted across his face when he caught her studying his jawline, the same way she used to when he was too young to hold still during grooming. You can stop counting my whiskers,he murmured under his breath, tone warm despite the tease. I promise I haven’t misplaced any yet. When she surged ahead—always the shield, always the blade—he followed with a quiet exhale, his gaze softening for the briefest heartbeat. No matter the world, the age, or the ruin, Bailu moved as though she belonged between him and every danger the world could conjure. Some things never changed. At her question, he cleared his throat lightly, rolling his shoulders as if shedding the last of the swamp’s weight. Are you asking,he said slowly, or interrogating me? I can never tell with you. He didn’t give her the satisfaction of a pause. So far? Only a handful. The boy dragged back from the edge—Touying, if he ever decides to stop coughing long enough to stand upright. The faintest wrinkle of concern touched his brow, gone as quickly as it came. And Kexin. There was a subtle shift in the air around his name for her—soft, warm, something lingering beneath the words he didn’t bother to hide but didn’t dare name, either. She found me first,he said simply, eyes drifting forward as his voice softened. Like she always does. A beat. Then the lazy smirk returned, a glint of slyness sparking in his gaze. And before you ask,he added, no, I did not recruit a whole court while you weren’t looking. If anyone else is here, they haven’t made themselves known yet. He caught her line about not scaring them and snorted—an actual, quiet laugh he didn’t bother to restrain. Oh, yes, that puts me at ease,he deadpanned, slipping effortlessly into dry imperial sarcasm. My mother, the gentle breeze. The soothing welcome. The soft, delicate flower. His tail flicked once, brushing hers as he stepped up beside her again. Come on,he said, softer now. I’ll introduce you properly. Before you frighten them off with all your… charm. |
