Nearly a full days of travel brought the woman inland, towering northern mountains and frosted trees cresting the horizon as she cleared the beach. Along the way, she gulped down mouthfuls of snow to quench her thirst, steadying herself until she could find a stream. The sky had begun to darken— clear baby blues shifting to a dramatic portrait of tropic orange and deep violet. Her nostrils flared as warm mist twirled from them, her breath hot and damp against the cooling temperatures. Gods, she loved the snow, but freezing her paws off never got easier.

Muted olive eyes searched against the ivory backdrop of snow, plush piles covering the frozen ground. The branches were thick with ice and blanketed by it atop their canopies, the darkening sky, a deep purple-twilight now, just visible through the gaps.

Worry had infested her gut, an uncomfortable, squirmy feeling. She felt vulnerable— alone, in unfamiliar lands, when just two sunsets ago she’d been nestled into her bed. Her mother would have known where to start, what path to follow… Where was the stormy-furred woman now? Perhaps she had found herself within these very mountains, after all, the cold and mountains seemed to call for her family unlike any other.

Hrefna pressed deeper into the frozen wonderland of a forest, only stopping at the gnarled roots of multiple towering oaks. A suitable home for tonight. Her paws made amble work of scraping the snow and frozen earth from the roots, forming a small enough hole in the earth to shelter in.

She paused, falling back onto her haunches, and allowed herself to be lulled into distraction by the twilight forest. Dark, hauntingly still, but a frozen paradise nonetheless.
