The sound of her sneeze cracked through the stillness—sharp, unceremonious, and completely graceless.

From the shadows where the broken walls leaned beneath the weight of years, he laughed.

It wasn’t often he saw his mother in such disarray, and for a fleeting moment, joy swelled in his chest at the sight of her familiar form. In this godforsaken place, it felt like a small mercy—a blessing only the Celestial Dragon could grant him.

天龍一定聽到了我的祈禱。 .

His voice slipped through the ruin like sunlight through mist, low, familiar, threaded with humor that only barely hid his concern. He stood a short distance away, framed by what used to be an archway, fur gilded in the fractured light filtering through the cracks. Even in the gloom, Shēnléi had a way of commanding the room simply by being in it.

He didn’t rush to her side, for he never did. Instead, he approached with the unhurried poise of a man who believed time itself bent around him. 如果你在這裡 , he mused aloud, 也許梅或我的女兒們會跟隨。甚至可能連叔叔也會。 He paused, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. 天啊,別讓我妻子出現——你可不會放過我。

His tone softened as he came closer, the teasing fading just enough to let the warmth bleed through. 也許天龍希望我殖民這片悲慘的土地 , he said wryly, before the humor dimmed. 哦,媽媽……你怎麼來到這裡?發生了什麼事?

When he finally reached her side, the playfulness ebbed into something gentler. His gaze softened — not with pity, but with the quiet warmth reserved only for the woman who had raised him.

這個地方真糟糕。 , he murmured lightly, the corner of his mouth twitching upward.

Even here, surrounded by ruin, she still looked the part of something regal and enduring—a relic of the empire’s grace that refused to bow to time. For a moment, the sight of her steadied him. Then she spoke, her voice soft but laced with that particular edge of command only she could manage with him.

Her paw brushed his cheek, and he allowed it, even leaned slightly into the touch—a rare gesture from him and a quiet surrender to her affection. His eyes, pale and reflective as polished bronze, searched hers as she circled him.

我沒事,母親。 His tone was even like the low cadence of a temple bell in the mist high up in the mountains. 這副身軀還沒學會如何屈服。
(I’m fine, Mother. This body hasn’t yet learned how to yield.)

A faint smirk followed, the kind that pulled only one corner of his mouth upwards—a flash of the arrogance he was known for slipping through the mask of serenity he tended to maintain as Emperor.

You worry too much, he murmured, switching back to the common tongue with that deliberate, slightly accented smoothness. If I had a scratch on me, I think you’d be the first to hear about it—loudly.

He let the humor linger for only a moment before his expression softened again, gaze flicking over her, checking the faint tremor in her joints, the stiffness in her posture. You shouldn’t be walking through water like this. If it chills you, I’ll have to endure a week of you pretending it doesn’t.

Shēnléi stepped closer so the distance between them fell away like a formality neither of them cared to keep. His voice dropped with uncertainty,  though he tried to hide it.

This place is not Heaven’s doing, he said at last, gaze lifting to the broken sky. No omen I’ve seen speaks of it. Whatever brought us here… it is outside the Dragon’s breath. So we tread carefully, until I understand its design.

He looked back down at her, eyes glinting faintly in the dim light. But no, he said more quietly, answering her final question. You’re not alone, Mother. You’ll never be.

He gave a soft, amused hum at her retort, one ear flicking as though to acknowledge it.

Of course not, he said, a corner of his mouth lifting. Heaven itself would break before you would.

His gaze followed hers out across the dark water, watching the ripples chase each other toward the far shore. His expression was calm and thoughtful, the way it always was when his mind drifted between logic and superstition.

The spirit that could move us from the Dragon’s reach, he murmured, would not be one of mercy. If such a thing exists, I’d prefer it stay sleeping. His voice softened at the end, but I fear it’s awake. He shuffled his paws, a rare show of anxiety that he only allowed his mother, the woman who raised him as her own, though neither shared a shred of blood. I heard something worrisome from a local who’s now with me, He nodded his head behind himself, gesturing deeper into the ruins. There is something in this land, something terrible if he is to be believed. The frown pulled deeply at Shenlei’s lips and furrowed his brow in obvious concern. It made him run for days, mother to the point that he was half starved and had two paws in the ground when I found him. Whatever it is, it’s no benevolent spirit or the celestial dragon. He settled, bronze eyes turning to meet his own mother’s pale ones.

When she leaned into him, he didn’t move away. For a brief moment, his shoulder pressed back against hers, a subtle, grounding touch that spoke louder than any words he might have offered. Then, as she straightened, so did he, his eyes catching the faint glint of accusation when she turned them on him.

Mother, he said slowly, tone dipping into that deliberate, teasing drawl he only ever used with her. You wound me. Do you truly think I’d choose to sleep in this— he flicked a paw at the murky water, —masterpiece of filth?

A faint chuckle left him, low and quiet but undeniably there. No. There’s a clearing just beyond those stones. Higher ground, dry soil. It will do until I find something better. He paused, looking her over with the same half-serious authority that had cowed generals. You’ll rest there tonight with the others. I’ll keep watch. There was an island west of here that he spotted and thought looked like a suitable place to re-establish the dynasty, but first, he wanted to see who else showed up, and he’s glad he did, for had he not waited, he would have missed his mother. Perhaps, next, his wives, daughters, or the rest of his family would show up. He truly hoped they did.

There was no room for argument in his tone, though his eyes betrayed the faintest trace of humor, that glimmer of fond defiance he inherited from no one but himself.

After a heartbeat of silence, he added under his breath, almost wryly, Besides, if I let the Empress-that-never-was ruin her fur in a swamp, the ancestors would start haunting me by dawn.

Shēnléi huffed, half a laugh, half a sigh. You still have that bite, he said, his tone dry but warm. Guess time didn’t dull your teeth after all.

He watched her move through the muck with that same effortless grace, tail flicking his nose on her way past. Mother, he muttered, smirking, you haunt me just fine while alive. Can’t imagine the afterlife being much quieter.

When she called, he followed, stepping beside her with his usual lazy ease. Introduce you? he said, brow lifting. You make it sound like they’ll survive long enough for that.

Then, with that familiar glint of mischief, he flicked his tail against her flank. Now try not to scare them off, yeah? They still think I’m respectable.

Shēnléi let out a quiet tsk, the corner of his mouth tugging upward in something far too amused for a son who’d just been threatened with toothless wrath.

Spirits forbid the day your teeth dull, Mother, he drawled, voice smooth as river glass. The continent would lose its greatest natural predator.

He fell into step beside her, matching her pace with that effortless, almost arrogant grace of his—shoulders loose, head held high, every movement deliberate in the way of a man who’d spent his whole life being watched. Her tail bobbed, his ear twitched, and the faintest smile ghosted across his face when he caught her studying his jawline, the same way she used to when he was too young to hold still during grooming.

You can stop counting my whiskers, he murmured under his breath, tone warm despite the tease. I promise I haven’t misplaced any yet.

When she surged ahead—always the shield, always the blade—he followed with a quiet exhale, his gaze softening for the briefest heartbeat. No matter the world, the age, or the ruin, Bailu moved as though she belonged between him and every danger the world could conjure. Some things never changed.

At her question, he cleared his throat lightly, rolling his shoulders as if shedding the last of the swamp’s weight. Are you asking, he said slowly, or interrogating me? I can never tell with you.

He didn’t give her the satisfaction of a pause.

So far? Only a handful. The boy dragged back from the edge—Touying, if he ever decides to stop coughing long enough to stand upright. The faintest wrinkle of concern touched his brow, gone as quickly as it came. And Kexin.

There was a subtle shift in the air around his name for her—soft, warm, something lingering beneath the words he didn’t bother to hide but didn’t dare name, either.

She found me first, he said simply, eyes drifting forward as his voice softened. Like she always does.

A beat. Then the lazy smirk returned, a glint of slyness sparking in his gaze.

And before you ask, he added, no, I did not recruit a whole court while you weren’t looking. If anyone else is here, they haven’t made themselves known yet.

He caught her line about not scaring them and snorted—an actual, quiet laugh he didn’t bother to restrain.

Oh, yes, that puts me at ease, he deadpanned, slipping effortlessly into dry imperial sarcasm. My mother, the gentle breeze. The soothing welcome. The soft, delicate flower.

His tail flicked once, brushing hers as he stepped up beside her again.

Come on, he said, softer now. I’ll introduce you properly. Before you frighten them off with all your… charm.
