Hàorán hadn't known what to make of it. The plains had not yielded her, nor the mountains. Not the forests, the rivers, the settlements, the forgotten paths where her scent might have lingered beneath another's. He had searched until searching became something beyond hope. Until it had become ritual—movement without expectation. One paw before another because stopping meant admitting what he could not bear to name.

He had not given up. He had simply...not allowed himself to imagine success anymore. And now—now she was here. He had felt it in the strange pull beneath his ribs, in the way his body had gone rigid despite every bone barking with exhaustion. Her scent had come to him, familiar enough to make his heart stumble yet distant enough that his mind refused to trust it.

How long he had spent carrying her in his mind that he no longer knew where remembrance ended and reality began. How long her voice had lived in places she had never been. How long her scent had clung to his dreams, even urging him to wake believing she had only stepped outside.

He could not face her beyond that first initial visit. Could not see the gauntness in her cheeks, her sides, her everything and find the blame to not reside within him. Him, her husband. Her protector. Him, the man who had failed her. The man who had waited until the world had to become cruel before he found the guts to finally cross that distance between them.

Hàorán pressed his head against the cool stone he found himself slouching against, truly breathing for the first time since she'd departed from him.

He had thought himself prepared to lose her. Prepared to leave this place behind and scour every remaining corner of the earth until there was nowhere left to search. He had not even imagined the possiblity that he might never find her. He had not imagined finding her here.He had not imagined that the thing he wanted most could be waiting in the very place he had been preparing to abandon.

Love rose inside him in a wave so sudden it frightened him. Not the polished affection of a husband. Not duty or obligation, but something rawer. Almost older. Something that had grown quietly beneath every disagreement, every silence, every moment she turned away from him.

He loved her.

The realization was not new. It was only unbearable now; because love was helplessness, too. It was knowing there was no command he could give, no army he could raise, no distance he could cross fast enough to guarantee she would remain. He had searched for her because he could not, selfishly, bear the world without her. And now, faced with the possibility that the world had given her back...

He did not know whether he was strong enough to reach for her.

Only that, somewhere between all his fears, he was suspended—

A man who had crossed the earth looking for his wife, and who suddenly found himself terrified of discovering that he had.
