ronan simply watched her, still not sure if she were truly alive. his eyes proved she was, but something about her seemed otherworldly, like she was not of the earth. “ain’t claimed. ‘m just here for the night.” he replied, voice rough but not unkind. his eyes flicked over the stranger with quiet caution.

his gaze lingered a moment, unreadable in the darkening shadows. “don’t look like you’re from around here.” ronan said, voice low and rough, worn at the edges like gravel under boot. “but ain’t my land to fight for.” he pressed his toes to the muddy gravel around the pond’s edge.

a pause as the woman spoke again. i promise i mean no harm. a beat passed. he studied the stranger, saw the tiredness in their stance. his tone softened, barely. “not you i’m worried about.” silence stretched between them before the quiet hum of the insects started once more.

“what’s your name?” it was a simple question, but he didn’t expect her to answer. names held power and she’d be right to keep it from him.
