The meeting call had dragged him out of his hiding place, he showed up with his head low, practiced scowl upon his face that usually kept most at a safe distance. He stuck to the edge of the gathering crowd, finding a spot where he could see the front without desiring a spotlight. His paws planted like he wasn’t restless. Like his leg didn’t want to bounce with all the noise.

Power. Wisdom. Courage.

Monty’s gaze slid across faces he didn’t know well enough to judge. Nóttin. Aurelia. Euphemia. Brynhild. Names he’d heard, maybe, but not names he could trust. And he realized very quickly he wasn't even sure why he was here.

Everyone else had a rulebook he didn’t get handed, there were histories and loyalties written between the lines and he was supposed to pretend he could read them? His jaw clenched, swallowing the uncertainties down.
