Something had shifted in Sarge after the Howff party. Whether it was finally letting loose, or the faint budding of belonging, the tension that usually defined his prickly form had begun to loosen its grip. It certainly helped that the sweet aroma lingering in the air seemed to buoy his mood. The sweetness was tantalizing in a way he’d never experienced before, the floral tones tugging at memories of happier times.
Deciding it had simply been too long since he’d truly attended to his wife, he set things into motion.
Finding a babysitter wasn’t nearly as difficult as he’d expected, though the list of those he trusted with their children was short. Still, he managed an arrangement that satisfied him well enough. Next came the pilfering of stores. As discreetly as he could manage, he stole a bowlful of fermented berries from their stash and tucked them away in an empty upstairs room for later use.
A night alone with his wife wouldn’t be complete without a meal, so he went out to hunt. Two gophers were all he managed to snag before giving up on anything grander, prey being as scarce as it was. Those, too, were tucked away. Finally, he returned with extra blankets, arranging them carefully to create a comfortable nest atop the mattress. It would be warm. It would be soft. It would be something Wisp deserved.
Satisfied, he slipped out and closed the door quietly behind him before making his way back to their room.
Pushing inside, he flashed Wisp a rare smile. Padding closer, tail swaying gently, he murmured,
It truly did. She glowed with joy and tenderness, and the sight of it warmed the gruff soldier to his core.
He leaned down to kiss her cheek, then shot her a mischievous look.
Eagerness gleamed in his golden eye as it lingered on the purple-rimmed gems of hers. Hell, she really was gorgeous. He’d always known she was beautiful, even in the mundane rhythms of daily life, but lately, something about her sent a thrill straight down his spine. Pride burned bright in his chest knowing she was his, and he was hers.
Stepping back, he gave her the space to rise and join him.
