She only knew the warmth of the womb at first. Soft, gentle, all encompassing. She’d been cradled and held aloft by her mother from the very beginning, and then… She was placed on her belly, on a hard, dirty surface, but never cold. Her mother’s warm tongue and thick fur chased away the chill in her frailest moment, and then her siblings surrounded her, smothering her in unyielding love from the very start.
It was then, surrounded by her sister, brother, and doting mother, that loyalty was permanently ingrained within her personality, even as a helpless, tumbling lump of a baby.
But now her eyes were open, and she could perceive something; shape, color… Well, mostly. It was still hard to discern, but she could make out the movement of something moving away. She grumbled, the scent of one of her siblings becoming fainter the further the pup wandered off; pardon, but no, they’re supposed to be napping in a big warm pile.
Putting her legs under her, she used all her might to stiffen them until she was standing. Unsteadily, but determined, she followed the movement of her sister until she bumped into her rear end. She stumbled back a step, then let out an indignant grumble and began mouthing the pup’s flank, until she found a tail, which she tugged on as if to drag her away.
Mrrrr!she declared, as if to say get your butt back over here and snuggle with me!
But then another shape moved, larger, immense, and too difficult for even her unfocused eyes to miss. Anastasia dropped her sister’s tail, peering up at the black figure as if to make out features… Wanting to get a better look, she toddled closer, accidentally stepping on the larger being’s enormous paw, her tiny toes slipping between lengthy claws.
She leaned closer, nose brushing coarse fur… Not mama’s scent, but close to it. Who?
