The fighting had ended for the day, and Alder had quietly managed to drift through the clamor of voices and tightly-pressed bodies until he at last managed to escape into the cold, still night that lay beyond.
He stood at the cliff's edge, looking up at the starry sky that twinkled overhead as a rare feeling of peace gently washed over him. The sunstone was a comforting weight about his neck - a token, a reminder that someone, somewhere, thought about and considered him an individual worthy of attention.
It felt... good. All of the aches and pains he had sustained from his fight with Tiberii paled in comparison to the elation in thinking that Sølvi cared.
She thought about him!
She had picked it out herself - she had seen its glittering fire - and of everyone on Mythris, she had thought of Alder.
His eyes began to mist -
And then he bristled.
A sudden chill went up his spine as a familiar scent tickled his nose, and every feeling of tranquility fled from him at once as he recognized wood smoke and incense wafting along the cold air like a calling card.
Cypress.
He had been here.
Why was he here?
A snarl tore unbidden from his throat, and his eyes smoldered with murderous intent.
Here. In Northfall. So close.
Looming dark against the pale snow, the crimson wolf turned and stalked back toward the heart of the mountain.
Patience.
It took all of his restraint. There was no point making a scene now over a shadow.

Whatever the reason for his coming, Alder would make sure Cypress never left.
