Indra and Tinesi slept. No one to pick on, no one to wrestle or play with, not unless he wanted to risk waking them up and getting scruffed by his mother for interrupting their rest. They were told to stay, to nap, that growing is physically taxing and they needed plenty of sleep to recover.

But Kailu was restless. Bored. The boy stared at his sleeping siblings for a moment, resting his chin on his paws, his expression listless and grouchy. With a huff, he acquiesced to his boredom and stood, stretching out his little legs before leaving the den to find something to do.

Kailu stopped at the mouth of the den to look around, making sure his mother wasn’t waiting nearby to intervene, then stepped out. Something in the sky made him pause, drawing his gray eyes upwards where millions of white pinpricks held his attention.

He’d never been outside when darkness fell… His mother called it “night”. What were those tiny white holes in the sky? Was the sky covered in dirt? Is that why it got dark? The pup stared with an otherwise stony expression, but inwardly, he was utterly intrigued and enraptured by the sight. A shooting star darted across the sky, making his ears flick forward as he tracked the movement.

Such a strange world he was born into… Much to discover and learn about.

(( Indra Melanthe + Jakten all welcome! Tinesi may or may not come along after a few posts)

The den had grown quiet. At some point during the evening, all three of her pups had finally settled after a long day of wrestling, tumbling, and endless questions. Or so Melanthe had thought.

A faint rustle reached her ears, then another. Yellow-green eyes slowly opened. For a few moments she remained perfectly still, watching as one dark little shape carefully—very carefully—crept toward the den entrance.

Kailu

The corners of her muzzle twitched. The boy was trying so hard to be stealthy. Melanthe waited until he had fully stepped outside before she rose to her paws and followed after him with all the quiet grace of a hunter. She found him sitting just outside the den, his gaze fixed entirely upon the night sky.

The stars.

For a moment, she simply watched him. The sight made something soft stir inside her chest, then she stepped forward. You know, she said gently, amusement warming her voice, if you wish to escape me unnoticed, you must be much quieter than that. Melanthe could not help the soft giggle that escaped her regardless of how her son reacted. She lowered herself onto the earth beside him, her shoulder lightly brushing against his smaller form.

I heard every little pawstep.

Her tail curled around him affectionately. Following his gaze upward, she looked to the countless stars scattered across the heavens. The night sky looked different here than it had in her homeland, but it was beautiful all the same.

They are called stars, she said softly. Her eyes remained upon the sky. When I was a little older than you, I used to spend many nights looking at them.

A gentle smile touched her muzzle.

They move across the sky as the seasons change. Some disappear for a time, while others return. And if you look closely enough… She tilted her head slightly upward. They can make shapes.

She lifted one paw and pointed toward a cluster of stars.

Some become hunters. Some become rivers. Some become great beasts. Her gaze drifted back down to him. There are stories hidden among the stars, Kailu. Our ancestors used them to guide their journeys and remember old tales. A soft breeze stirred her fur.

Would you like to learn some of the special stars? Her ears perked forward. I could show you the Great Hunter, who chases darkness across the heavens. She pointed to another section of the sky. Or the Celestial River, where the spirits are said to travel. A thoughtful hum escaped her. And there is one of my favorites… Her expression softened. A group of stars your grandmother once told me represented a family, always together, no matter how far they wandered.

She lowered her head slightly to look at him.

What do you think, little one? Shall we learn the stories of the sky tonight?

The boy’s keen ears picked up on the whisper of footsteps even in their undeveloped state, a rounded little ear swivelling to match the direction the sound came from before he even turned his head. And then there was his mother, covering him with her shadow after discovering him where he shouldn’t be.

He stared back at her flatly in what could be seen as defiance, but she didn’t appear upset with him. He only made a mean noise when she teased him for being too noisy, pairing a quiet grumble with a wrinkled nose, but he soon slumped against her bigger leg when she settled by his side.

He tore his eyes away from the sky for the briefest moment to listen to her speak. The sound of her clear cadence coupled with her thick tail blanketing him from the chill created the perfect conditions for the little boy to fall back asleep, but he banished the thought. No, he was far more interested in trying to find the shapes in the stars she spoke of, bringing his attention back to the sky.

His cool blue gaze reflected the glimmer of the night sky, as if the stars were contained in his very eyes, Star shape…

There was a great band across the sky, soft and colorful, like clouds persisting through the darkness. Stars glimmered against it as if it were a dusting of glitter over a gossamer sheet, some clustered so tightly together they looked like they were one unit.

When his mother offered to tell him a story about the stars, he turned to nod his head, the only sign of his interest, aside from his eyes intently trained on her. Of course he wanted to hear a story, he always wanted to hear stories.

Melanthe noticed the way his attention never truly left the sky, even as he leaned into her warmth. The small tension in his body—the stubborn refusal to surrender to sleep—was familiar. It reminded her, painfully and fondly, of pups who believed the world would stop existing if they closed their eyes for too long.

Her gaze followed his upward, into the vast spread of night. A moment passed in quiet stillness. Then she lifted one paw, gently guiding his focus toward a single bright point in the sky.

This, she said softly, is the Northern Star, Polaris. Her tone changed slightly here—becoming steadier, almost reverent in a practical way. It is always there. No matter the season. No matter where you wander. Her paw remained steady as she pointed, making sure his young eyes could follow. If you ever become lost… truly lost… you can look for it, and it will show you north. The direction of home.

She paused, letting the meaning settle into him.

You do not chase it, she added gently. You simply follow where it leads. Her paw lowered slightly, and she exhaled a soft breath through her nose. For travelers like us, it is one of the most important stars in the sky. Then she shifted her gaze slightly to the side, pointing again—this time to a cluster of stars arranged in a familiar curve, smaller and tighter than the rest. And these, she continued, are part of Ursa Minor.

A faint warmth touched her voice, as if she were recalling something long carried through generations. The little bear. Her paw traced the shape slowly through the air, connecting the stars in an invisible outline only imagination could complete. Some say it is a guardian constellation. Others say it is a child of a greater bear that watches over the night.

Her eyes flicked down to Kailu for a moment, studying his expression before returning to the sky.

It is close to the Northern Star, she explained. Which is why Garou often use it as a guide. If you can find Ursa Minor, you can find north. And if you can find north… you can find your way anywhere.

A gentle pause followed, the wind stirring softly through the mountain air around them.

Melanthe leaned slightly closer so her shoulder brushed his again.

Do you see it? she asked quietly. The small curve… like a tiny creature curled up in the sky?

Her voice softened further.

The sky is never just empty, Kailu. It remembers paths. It remembers journeys. It remembers those who travel beneath it.

She let the silence linger for a moment longer before adding, almost as an afterthought:

And now you know two of its secrets.

Kailu

Kailu absorbed this knowledge as best he could with his limited understanding of the world. He had his own perception of reality, but it was constantly evolving as his senses sharpened and he learned more from his mother’s spoken word or by observing her actions. For now, she was his world, but even that concept was beginning to shift as he gazed up at the night sky, and learned that there was an even bigger world out there beyond the nest of his siblings.

Gray eyes darted between the stars above, trying to map the shape his mother indicated. He couldn’t exactly see it… But he could see one star standing out amongst the rest, the brightest star in the sky. It beamed at him radiantly, a beacon that would undoubtedly always draw his attention. Polaris.

Maybe if he continued to return to the sky, and studied it long enough, then one day he would see what his mother saw. He looked up at her, eyes full of starlight, and like the first sighting of a rare bird, a soft smile appeared on his face.

More? he asked, requesting to know more about the map of the sky.
