Disciplinary & Safety

Some people believe that once someone causes harm, they should be permanently condemned, regardless of growth or context. As staff, we do not hold that belief. We believe that people are more than their worst moment, and that permanent exclusion should not be the default outcome when accountability and change are possible.

For some, safety means knowing someone is gone for good. For others, accountability can also mean giving someone the chance to do better when real change is shown. As staff, our job is to hold both of those truths at once, to protect the community while also being fair. We don’t believe permanent removal should always be the first or only answer when growth is genuinely possible.

We recognize that this system can feel scary, especially for those who have experienced harm in the past. The disciplinary system will continue to grow and adapt as the community does, but the goal is simple: clear communication and a gradual approach with real-time consequences and real opportunities for change.

Degree System

The Vivarium operates under a "degree" strike system when it comes to uncollaborative gameplay and rule breaks. A strike is not a ban from the community, but a notice that continual bad behavior is seen and noted. Vivarium works under the premise of correcting and educating members on these mistakes to help avoid their repetition in the future. We believe that everyone makes mistakes, but that people can grow and change when given support, correction, and the right environment to thrive in.

In this way, our strike system operates under "degrees" (I, II, III, IV, V) that outline the severity of the transgression and the following consequence and remediation of such behavior. Bans and suspensions are the last resort and are often only given when a member accumulates multiple II and III degree strikes within a 3-12 month timeline.

But please note that if a transgression is seen to be of massive and immediate threat to the safety of the community, lower degree strikes may be bypassed.

I Degree

Behaviors: Isolated events, communication issues, passive aggression/microaggressions. Violator is appropriately remorseful.

Purpose: Conversation is directed to "correct"

Corrective Action: Usually None

Expiration: 3-6 months

II Degree

Behaviors: Incidental harm, caused unintentionally, yet still involves victims. Violator is appropriately remorseful.

Purpose: Actions taken to prevent inappropriate behavior

Corrective Action: Consequence directly related to transgression

Expiration: 6 - 12 months.

III Degree

Behaviors: Harm caused with malicious intent (or repeatedly, or exceedingly public). Still, Violator is appropriately remorseful

Purpose: Significant liberties revoked, "last warning," significant staff supervision.

Corrective Action: Same as II Degree but without expiration. Also, required check-ins with staff

Expiration: 12+ months, or does not expire.

IV Degree

Behaviors: Stealing/copying, age or identity fraud, vitriolic slander, smear campaigns, stirring public outrage and dissent instead of raising concerns and offering constructive criticism, any situation where the Violator is NOT appropriately remorseful

Purpose: Protect the players of Viv, and offer an avenue for growth

Corrective Action: Suspension

Expiration: Suspension may expire after 6-12 months. If/when the violator enters their parole period, they will re-enter at a Strike Level I, II, or III.

V Degree

Behaviors: An accumulation of three or more level II or III strikes, major safety concerns toward the community, sexual harassment, and where interventions have not yielded reformative behavioral results

Purpose: Protect the players of Vivarium

Corrective Action: Permanent Ban

Expiration: Never

Strikes are always privately issued to the offending member, and we will always explain why it is being given, and that we will be more watchful of recurring behavior. Oftentimes, a conversation will occur even before a strike is administered to an offending member, to keep communication lines open.

Once a strike expires, they are no longer active; however, they may still be referenced by Staff to assess possible patterns of behavior if more are accumulated.

Suspensions & Bans

Suspensions are a timed, temporary removal of access to the site to address more extreme rule violations, allow time for change and review, or generally pause participation while concerns are resolved and the suspended member is given time to think and re-evaluate their actions.

A ban is a more permanent removal of access issued in response to severe or repeated, unrepentant violations with no accountability, or when continued participation poses a real risk to the community.

Suspensions will have a general return date, while bans generally do not and are issued when lesser measures are no longer appropriate.

Reintegration Process

Reintegration is rare, deliberate, and supervised. It is based on accountability, demonstrated change, acceptance of punishment and terms, and current behavior - not popularity, nostalgia, or pressure.

The Reintegration Program is a conditional process that may allow certain previously suspended or banned members to return to the community under strict oversight - if eligible.

Its purpose is to balance accountability with community safety by evaluating a returning member’s current behavior, demonstrated accountability for their actions, and ability to follow community standards - not simply past conduct alone.

Reintegration, where granted, is time-limited and subject to clearly defined rules, tighter restrictions, and monitoring. Participation does not guarantee continued access; any violation of reintegration conditions or recurrence of prior behaviors may result in immediate disciplinary action, up to and including permanent removal.

Reintegration is not available in all cases and is implemented cautiously to prioritize the stability, safety, and trust of the community.

Staff will be monitoring these members closely and giving them a framework to follow for proper reintegration. These will involve certain restrictions and will be tailored for each eligible member. Some examples may include restricted access to certain boards, types of threads (AW, PRP, PRP 18+, etc), limited Discord access, and/or limited site access.

Terms of eligibility:

  • Accountabililty with the understanding of impact
  • Respect for boundaries and authority
  • Time and Distance
  • Willingness to accept the consequences and the restrictions upon their return
  • Cooperates willingly with safeguards

Eligibility does not mean immediate approval into the program, but a consideration for it.

Staff members with close personal relationships or prior conflicts with a returning member will recuse themselves from eligibility and reinstatement decisions.

Offenses that will never be allowed back:

  • Sexual exploitation, grooming, or predatory behavior
  • Doxxing, credible threats, or targeted harassment campaigns
  • Patterned, deliberate, and persistent hate speech, slurs, or identity-based abuse
  • Scamming, fraud, or deliberate financial exploitation
  • Repeated boundary violations after intervention
  • Patterned abusive behavior across multiple communities

Returning Member Restrictions

Discord Restrictions
  1. Do not send unsolicited DMs to affected members - these are members that specifically have been impacted by your past actions. DMs may be allowed with:
    • Prior consent of said party
    • After mediated staff discussion
    • Members who DM you first

Staff may not always know every person who felt impacted by the offender's actions. If unwanted contact does occur, staff may be updated, and will approach you with updated boundaries.

Any DM-related complaints of offensive behavior will result in immediate review if it involves VivariumRPG and its members.

  2. You may also be temporarily excluded from (tailored to individual cases):
    • Sensitive topic channels
    • NSFW channels
    • Community feedback channels
  3. There may be no public discussion of:
    • Members’ past bans
    • Staff decisions - while you may use the Member Discussion channel for broader discussions where applicable, we encourage members to open a ticket with staff to discuss more private & personal concerns.
    • Other members’ moderation history

Forum Restrictions
  1. Do not tag characters in your threads that belong to an individual with grievances against you unless given explicit permission.
  2. Do not post in AWs made by characters whose authors hold grievances against you unless given explicit permission.
    • 2.a One exception: you MAY post in group/pack-centric threads where characters are all involved together in some fashion; but you do not need to interact with each other, nor may you try to force engagement if one party is unwilling.
  3. Additional restrictions may be implemented on a case-by-case basis.

General Boundaries and Avoidance
  1. You must immediately disengage in a behavior if asked by staff.
  2. You must respect blocks, mutes, and avoidance without comment.
  3. You must not refer to affected members directly or indirectly.

Staff may enforce no-contact rules without explanation.

Monitoring & Enforcement

During the trial period, staff may:

  • Monitor messages more closely
  • Review reports with lower tolerance thresholds
  • Enforce a stricter interpretation of rules

Warnings are not guaranteed; swift and immediate removal may result from a more serious offense.

Duration & Review

Regarding the length of your trial period:

  • Trial periods last for a minimum of 6 months; this time may be extended.
  • Midpoint reviews may occur
  • Completion does not guarantee full reinstatement

Restrictions may be:

  • Reduced
  • Extended
  • Or reinstatement revoked altogether

Immediate Removal Triggers (Non-Exhaustive)

Any of the following may result in immediate removal:

  • Boundary violations
  • DM complaints regarding malicious, offensive, or unkind behavior
  • Narrative campaigning
  • Repeating of past harmful behavior
  • Arguing moderation publicly
  • “Testing” limits intentionally

Member Appeals

Members who were directly impacted by a previously suspended or banned individual’s past conduct may submit an appeal to staff regarding a proposed reintegration. Appeals should focus on relevant, current concerns, including evidence that the individual has not demonstrated accountability, behavioral change, or poses a material risk to the community.

While the impact of past harm is recognized, appeals based solely on residual discomfort, without indications of current concerning behavior or risk, will not solely determine staff decisions. Appeals are reviewed privately, and all final determinations rest with staff.

Appeals must be submitted within two weeks (14 days) of notification.

  1. Right to Appeal
  2. When a previously banned member is considered for reinstatement, community members who were directly impacted by the individual’s past behavior may submit an appeal to staff outlining concerns regarding the reinstatement.

To start an appeal, you may use the Ticket system via Discord or directly message the Admin account on-site.

  3. Scope of Appeals
  4. Appeals must be grounded in specific, current, and reasonable concerns, and will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

    • Evidence that the returning member has not demonstrated sustained behavioral change, accountability, or adherence to community expectations since their ban
    • Credible indications that reinstatement poses a material risk to community safety, stability, or trust
    • Patterns of behavior - recent or ongoing - that mirror or meaningfully relate to the conduct that led to the original ban
  5. Limitations of Appeals
  6. Appeals will not be upheld solely on the basis of:

    • Objections based primarily on past harm or personal discomfort, when no current pattern of harmful behavior has been demonstrated
    • Objections rooted exclusively in past actions without evidence that those behaviors are continuing or likely to recur
    • General opposition to second chances, rehabilitation, or staff-led reintegration processes

While residual feelings from past harm may understandably cause ongoing discomfort, appeals based primarily on such feelings - when not accompanied by evidence of current concerning behavior - will be considered, but will not solely determine staff decisions.

  7. Evaluation Standard
  8. Staff will weigh appeals by balancing:

    • The returning member’s demonstrated accountability, growth, and current conduct
    • The severity and context of their prior actions
    • The credibility and relevance of concerns raised by impacted members

The appeals process is not intended to invalidate past harm, but to ensure decisions are made based on present behavior and future risk, rather than unresolved emotional conflict alone.

Staff may also impose additional safeguards or conditions if warranted by the appeal.

  9. Final Authority
  10. All reinstatement and appeal decisions rest with staff. Decisions will prioritize the long-term health of the community while recognizing that meaningful change is possible and may warrant conditional reintegration.

Member Tools

Ignore/Block Function

Users on your Ignore List are now considered "blocked" in that your profiles, posts (IC and OOC), and threadlogs will be hidden from them. This is a feature you can manage from your OOC accounts and it will apply it to any attached accounts you have. If you'd like, you may also manage your attached accounts separately.

To utilize this function, go to the User CP --> Buddy List/Ignore, you can choose users you'd like to ignore.

By ignoring someone's OOC account, you will block all of their attached accounts, or you may add accounts you want to block individually/manually.

Please be aware, that while the comfort of our members is of the utmost priority, Staff still encourages active communication between members before utilizing the Ignore List. We encourage you to use Staff as a bridge to help repair communication gaps when able. Please keep in mind that relevant IC information, branching plots, and branching character connections are likely to be impacted by over-utilizing this feature.

Blocking Guests

For those who wish to block guests from viewing your profile, posts, and threadlogs, there is now an option at the bottom of your profile in "Edit Profile" called "Block Guests". This will hide your profile, posts, and threadlogs from Guests and Pending Placement users.

Your posts will be hidden to guests/pending accounts even if the thread your character is in allows guests to view it. However, this setting must be applied on each account you'd like to block guests on.

Rest assured, content is not loaded when this checker happens, meaning that someone cannot go into "View Source Code" and find your hidden content if it is hidden to them — it will not load the content if the checker determines the user or guest is blocked.
